Benedict Cumberbatch caught short at the Sci-Fi London Film Festival

Benedict Cumberbatch and Guillermo Del Toro are two of the stars involved with this year's Sci-Fi London Film Festival, which starts at the Stratford Picture house today.

The Star Trek Into Darkness actor and the Blade II director are on the panel set the task of choosing the winner of the festival's 48hours competition, in which teams of budding filmmakers have to shoot a five-minute sci-fi movie in just two days.

The judges have narrowed down 180 entries to a shortlist of 10 and the winner, to be unveiled tomorrow (01.05.13), will pick up £1,000 plus a film deal. Examples of the shorts in the competition are at Multiverse.

On top of the 48hours competition and the festival's usual collection of sci-fi movie premieres, cult films and the Arthur C. Clarke fiction award, this year's event also celebrates Doctor Who's 50th birthday, with Doctor Who films, books and comics all part of the seven day schedule.

More info on the official site. Sci-Fi London runs until Monday 6 May.
